Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in collecting items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to visit various locations close by to look for raw gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you then read along as we discuss the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

First off you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. You'll find it very helpful to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be darker or palerthan a pure color tend to be less valued.

The cut of the stone is the second most important value determination to consider before a purchase is made. How precise the cut is is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

The next factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next item to look at is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or check out raw material in the peridot fields in Chudleigh Park, Queensland, Australia.

Very Good Grade diamonds: This grade also has high brilliance and scintillation,
but expect them to be a bit darker in the center or around the edges. In some
cases a diamond can have top brilliance and scintillation, but be down graded by
its pattern. The stone above has a splintery pattern that prevents it from being
graded excellent.

Cleaning gemstones is easy. Simply soak the piece in a bowl of warm, soapy water for several minutes. Then use a soft, non-metallic brush to remove any grime. If you use a jewelry cleanser, make sure it is non-abrasive. Don't use harsh chemical cleaners, and be careful when cleaning the item in the sink because it can end up down the drainpipe. Also, keep in mind that some gemstones may have been treated or enhanced by heating, oiling, irradiation or diffusion. Heated and irradiated stones generally don't require special care when cleaning, but diffused stones could become lighter if scrubbed too hard.

Selenite helps to align you with higher consciousness. As you develop
spiritually it is beneficial to allow yourself to listen to or sense guidance
from your higher self, spirit guides or angels. This stone opens the crown
chakra to receive transmissions of information and wisdom. On a physical level
it helps with the spine, bone and muscular structure of the body. Selenite is a
white stone, though recently I have found red selenite (it looks orange to me)
that can re-align the emotional structure of ones consciousness.
