Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some reading material. You want to learn as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.

Number one to look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar in pureness to the spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are muted or are too dark can lower the value quite easily.

Gemstone cut is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase is made. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. This is talking about the stones purity with no internal conclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next comes size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite. And in Canada you can find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec along with amethyst from Nova Scotia. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

Since 1892, Sapphires have been mined at Gem Peak area on Rock Creek near
Philipsburg, Montana. The first load of sapphires is shipped from Placer mines
and eventually as far away as Switzerland for watch jewels and fine instrument
bearings. Here was a world-class discovery and supply to meet a growing demand
for corundum; sapphires and rubies. That Rock Creek deposit was known early on
as being exceedingly abundant, and is notable as the only placer concentration
plentiful enough to have been worked commercially for sapphires. Since those
early days, and continuing into modern times, Montanans and visitors have
enjoyed mining gemstones for fine jewellery. Colours range from the classic "
cornflower blue" to "red-orange" and "mint green." The sapphires found and
finished here have a character and beauty all their own.
