Beads And Gemstones

By Jon Fell

Any solid material that can be shaped, drilled and colored can surely be made into beads. Beads are made from all the countries of the world. They are made from animal bones, horn, wood, seeds, sea shells, coconut shells, precious and semi precious stones, clay, metals, pearls, fabrics, and glass. The commonly used metals are gold, silver, copper, and brass (Merlin's gold). For those with expensive taste, platinum is available.Metal is molten, molded and shaped into various sizes of beads. Furthermore, metal can be made into wires that are intricately shaped into beads of varous sizes.

For thousands of years, beads have been used for various purposes; spiritual, in religious ceremony, socialization-gifts, trade by barter, to determine social ranks, wealth, pay dowries, magical powers, protection, decoration, and adornment.
Initially, beads were only available to the royalties and the very rich.

Presently, glass is the most versatile medium for making beads. Hence the free availability of glass beads in the world. Glass is readily available in various colors. It is molten and molded into various shapes and sizes, from very small to very large. Rocailles and bugles are very small and extensively used in embroidery and loom work. In some countries, beads are worn for adornment by men,
women, and children.

Human attraction for gemstones is not limited to the stones' esthetic values, but also to the magical and monetory value attached to the gemstones. For thousands of years, humans have acclaimed and strongly believe in the magical and healing power of gemstones. According to ancient history, the Egyptian king, Nechepsus wore a dragon-green jasper over the area of his digestive organs to strenthen and energize the functions of the organs. In the early days of Western medical practice, doctors revered jasper as powerful regulators of metabolic processes involving the stomach and the digestive organs. Just as vegetables, minerals, and vitamins are recognized to enhance good health, so are gemstones which are also minerals. In the olden days gemstones featured heavily in the treatment of the human body, externally and internally. Gemstones were won for the maintenance of good health and to cure diseases. Externally, gemstones were applied to various parts of the body or worn as beads. They were also applied into wounds to enhance healing processes. Internally, powdered gemstones were ingested orally. In some countries, water into which gemstones have been soaked is imbibed as curative medicine. It is now known that gemstones are poisonous. Therefore they are no longer ingested. However, homeopathic medicine still uses very minute amount of poison as curative medicine.

Tradition attests to the healing power of plant agate and moss agate, particularly in cases of bacterial infection. According to stories, these agates become heavier after being laid on the infected part of the body and when healing had been effected. Gemstones have been traditionally acclaimed to have healing power, enhance good health, offer protection, prosperity, improve knowledge, and give power.
The following are among the the many: Amethyst is said to relieve headaches, while emerald is said to help neurological conditions. Agates are claimed to procure security, energy, and power.

Synthetic gemstones are real gemstones in that their mineral composition is
exactly the same as those in nature. The only difference is that they are made
by humans in a short amount of time versus by nature over hundreds of thousands
of years. Created stones are always less valuable than natural stones because
they are less rare. Generally, created stones are only available for more
expensive gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. One
example of a widely accepted created gemstone is the cultured pearl: very
prevalent even in the most elite jewelry.
