Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby or in other countries to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby then read along as we discuss the things you should know to start this hobby.
To begin with you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. You'll find it very helpful to know what you're buying and prevent you from making mistakes. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They drop in value the farther they are from the pure spectral color.
The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will be muted or washed out. Color saturation, hue and tone will be inconsistent.
Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. Gemstone clarity relates to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. The gemstone without flaws is more valuable. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Many hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.
Next comes size and weight. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are valued by the unit called the carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.
Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. Just in the United States in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras Or you can take the time to travel and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.
