Collecting Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Many people today say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we examine the things you need to know in starting in this hobby.
To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you learn about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.
The first item to factor in should be the color of the gemstone. You'll want the stone that is as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. In general terms, the prices of very dark are very pale precious and semi precious stones are lower in value.
How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. The precision of the cut determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
Another factor to look at is the clarity of the stone. This is talking about the purity of the stone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.
Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You can collect gemstones like Hematite, Agate or Benitoite and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite

Benitoite is only found in San Benito County, in Southern California. Just a few
hundred carats are found each year. A lot of this, maybe even a majority, is
kept in its natural form. Very little gets cut and offered for sale. Because it
is fairly well known and quite beautiful, the larger pieces demand prices around
$1,000 per carat. This is quite a bit less than a diamond or ruby, but much more
that other rare gems.

Quartz that is formed of multigrained microcrystals, not just of one single crystal, is called chalcedony. The name is applied to many well-known varieties of gemstones. They are found in all 50 states and come in many colors and color combinations. Unlike quartz, chalcedony does not look clear and glassy but waxy and translucent. It refers specifically to translucent white, blue, pale grayish-blue, purple, pink, yellow, orange, red, or solid-colored chalcedony other than carnelian, sard, or Chrysoprase, which are naturally-colored chalcedony varieties. Most chalcedony used in jewelry, as with the stones used by James Avery, is color-enhanced for a more consistent color. It ranks 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness which means it is fairly durable to wear as jewelry.
